Course Description

This course provides basic, essential knowledge of coloured stones, with an in-depth focus on the “Big Three” of the gemstone world: ruby, sapphire and emerald. Subjects covered include the language of coloured stones; colour’s powerful role in gemstone value and the unique characteristics of popular coloured stones; and how colour, clarity, cut and carat weight affect a gem’s value. Reference material includes the GIA Essential Colored Stone Reference Guide PDF, which contains important and interesting facts about today’s most popular gemstones. The final exam is online, open book, and does not require a proctor.
